How can I get to the fastest per point measurement sweep speed as defined in the VNA datasheet?

Things to consider...

  • The number of active channels and traces - the more you have of either, the more measurement/sweep activity will be taking place. To get to the 42 us per point, you will want to limit the setup to 1 channel and 1 trace. This helps to limit the amount of source switching, tuning, and settling.
  • Limiting the number of points will also expedite the measurement process.
  • Similar to limiting the number of points, you can choose to use segmented sweeping to only focus on the regions of the sweep that are of the most interest. This may help you to get to narrower IF Bandwidth settings per region (see next point).
  • Higher IF Bandwidth (filter) settings will lead to faster settling but result in a lower dynamic range and may lower the accuracy of the measurement. This is similar to the speed-vs-accuracy tradeoff in other T&M instrumentation.
  • Averaging must be turned off; it is off by default.
  • Limit the type of calibration to just what is needed for the measurement application. The more errors that your calibration accounts for, the more computation the VNA will require per point. For example, if you only want to perform single port measurements, only perform a single port calibration and only include the corrective calibration steps that are most relevant to the measurement.
