My 5000 Series sensor is not detected by VPM3. Does it need different software, firmware, or something else?

If you are using a 5000 Series sensor made within the last 6 years, it is highly likely that firmware is not your problem. There was an update for older model sensors - non-D in some cases and earlier model D sensors (5012D, 5016D, 5017D, 5018D, 5019D) - but the firmware has been part of standard hardware since 2018.

Beyond this, VPM3 has known issues connecting to the wideband power sensors when the operating system is either Windows 10 or Windows 11. We continue to ship the software on CD-ROM along with the sensor to accommodate existing customers still running "copy exact" setups where the Windows 7 OS (or earlier) is still active. Expect this software ROM to be discontinued in 2025.

The 5000 Series wideband sensors can now be accessed using the free Bird RF Meter software. It is not as elaborate as VPM3 and Bird is planning a release that would include the same features, however, no date or timeline is available to inform delivery.

If use of the Bird RF Meter software does not resolve your connectivity issue, then there is a chance the USB controller on the sensor may have been damaged, and the sensor will need to be returned to Bird for repair. If you need to do so,

  1. Navigate to the Bird Service Pricing & RMA Request landing page.
  2. Fill out all required fields.
  3. Click the 'Submit' button.
